Beta carotene is a pigment and antioxidant that can serve as a precursor to vitamin A in some animals.


Why It Appears on Pet Food Labels

Beta Carotene is added to pet food products to:

  • Contribute to vitamin A activity (primarily in dogs)
  • Support immune function

Where It Is Commonly Found

  • Dry kibble
  • Formulas with added vitamins

Label Context

Cats do not efficiently convert beta carotene to vitamin A and require preformed vitamin A.
