Marine microalgae oil is an oil extracted from tiny marine algae grown in controlled systems. It is commonly added as a source of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid.
Why It Appears on Pet Food Labels
It may be included to:
- Provide DHA omega-3 fatty acids
- Support brain and eye development (especially in puppy formulas)
- Support skin and coat health as part of a fat/omega-3 blend
How It Compares to Fish Oil
Microalgae oil can serve a similar purpose to fish oil because both can supply omega-3s. Some formulas use microalgae oil alongside fish oil, while others may use it as an alternative source of DHA.
